Taking a closer look at marketing adult entertainment websites

I am writing this article following a discussion I had with a couple of fellow online marketers. Two of them mainly market adult websites. We discussed whether it was "OK" to market adult websites. My friends who do market adult websites made some interesting points.....

Let me start by saying that this is not an article for or against marketing adult entertainment websites. That is something you need to decide for yourself. Rather I am trying to decide whether it is "more OK" to market "cure your arthritis" and "get out of debt" than "pictures of naked men / women"?

As an affiliate or online marketer we are guided by Return On Investment (ROI) and conversion rates. We look to get paid well for our efforts.

Speaking in general terms we know that some sectors pay "better". Some lucrative sectors include gambling, gaming, betting, personal finance, health, web hosting, and adult entertainment. Yikes.....did I really say adult entertainment!?

Most of the online marketers I know shy away from marketing adult entertainment websites. But during our discussion an intersting question was asked: Why should it be "more OK" to market fee based "get out of debt programs" and "miracle health products"?

Bad marketing is bad marketing is bad marketing

My friends' point was that acting responsibly is a choice. And this holds true regardless of the sector or product you decide to market.

My friend used the following example to "make his point": Let's look at two different sites:

  • Take a site like Janes Guide (www.janesguide.com - please note that this site has an adult theme). The site is well written and has been around for a long time. It has taken many hours to develop this website. And the site does fill a need in the market.
  • And now compare it to one of the thousands of "for adsense" websites that are created around expensive keywords for the sole purpose of making money.

Which of these two sites is "better"? Naah, you don't need to write to me. But it is food for thought, is it not?

But I guess the bottom line is that acting responsibly is indeed a choice..... What that constitutes is however a whole new ball game.
