Analyze and compare affiliate program earnings and Adsense revenue

Let me start by saying that there is really no reason to choose between affiliate programs and Adsense. In almost all cases will web marketers and publishers benefit from using both to monitize traffic to their websites.

Comparing two programs with different earnings structure

Affiliate programs always look attractive due to high payouts. Adsense on the other hand is attractive as we do not have to sell anything to make money.

So how do we best compare these two very different alternatives? The best way I have found is to quite simply look at two factors:

  • money made during a given period of time
  • number of pageviews on your website that same period

Now we are cooking. Let's say you had 40,000 pageviews last month. You earnings were $200 in affiliate program commissions during that same period. In other words you made:

  • $200 per 40,000 pageviews or stated differently
  • $5 per thousand pagewievs ($200 divided by 40)

We want to pay attention to the last one. The earnings calculated per 1000 pageviews. And here is why.

After you have joined Adsense you will see that they report your earnings per 1000 impressions under the column named CPM. Now it is easy to make a like-for-like comparison between Adsense and your favourite affiliate program.

Doing this comparison calculation on a page-by-page basis can be very rewarding. You may find that some pages are not strong enough to sell the customer, but nevertheless attract targeted visitors that generate revenues from Adsense.

Even better, you may find some pages where people are ready to pull out the credit card. Obviously, you do not want Adsense on those pages.

So analyze your options. Take action. And keep a close eye on the TOTAL earnings figure.
