You could argue that all marketing and promotion activities come at a cost. After all your time has a value. If you were not busy promoting your website you could probably at least make minimum wage somewhere else. But for this article "free" means not having to spend money.

In my experience free marketing and promotion techniques promise more than they deliver. The benefits tend to be short-lived. Often you are balancing on a fine line between "do's and don'ts". But there are a couple of good and really worthwhile free marketing techniques. Here we will discuss one. And probably the most effective.

Write and submit articles to online article databases

To write and submit articles to online article databases is a straightforward process. To summarize it goes like this.

  • you write an article on your favourite topic
  • you include a paragraph at the end of the article with a link to your site and information about you / your site
  • you post the article to the online article database(s)
  • other webmasters find your article and post in on their websites

    When you write and submit articles you only invest your time and benefit in a number of ways:

  • you get a link to your website from the article database website(s)
  • you get additional links when other publishers of websites use your article on their websites
  • your website get exposure to help build a stronger brand and name recognition
  • you profile yourself as an expert in your field

    What about drawbacks?

    Are there no drawbacks to posting articles for others to use? Personally I feel this is a solid technique. But there are of course some points worth considering.

    You could argue that you are better off spending time developing content for your own website. This is of course true. But keep in mind that posting articles is not a substitute to writing content for your own website. Rather view it as a means to build link popularity without having to email strangers out of the blue.

    Another "drawback" is of course that it takes a lot of time to write a good article. And posting badly written articles goes against the whole idea as far as I am concerned. When I do not have the time to write good, informative articles - I don't use this technique. How you tackle the time vs. quality issue is of course up to you.

    Submit your articles and remember..

    There are a couple of points I would like to make before I sign off.

    Submit your articles to more than one article database if it is allowed. Check the terms of the individual article databases. Remember that each time you post your article to a new article database you get at least one more link to your website. And of course, you also increase your exposure to other webmasters looking for content for their websites.

    The links you get from other webmasters' websites are valuable as they tend to be on-topic links. In other words you get a link to your home decoration website from another website publishing information on home decororation or a related field. You want these high-relevance on-topic links. This is yet another reason to write great articles.

    Finally, if you are just starting a new website it can be difficult to get links from other websites. Submitting articles to online article databases is a great way to jump-start the promotion of your new website.
