Getting that first elusive link
For most people, sending emails requesting link exchanges seems to be the easiest or at least most obvious way to start. But I don't like sending emails to people I do not know. It's just too close to SPAM to my liking. You can of course contact people that advertise link exchanges on their site. But when you look closer those sites tend to fall into one of two categories:
Your site needs to be RIGHT on topic. You should have at least a Google Page Rank 4. No affiliate links, and so on.
I am sure you have seen this type of website. Between 5-10 content pages and a link directory second only to Google and Yahoo. Networking the "non-Ethernet" wayPersonally, I find message boards and forums to be the best alternative. And I am not only talking about signature files. And I am definitely not suggesting self-promotion disguised as a genuine question. No, I am talking about the combination of signature files and being an active member in discussions. I am talking about offering advise and being willing to share your experiences. Do that and you will find that you will make a whole new set of cyber-buddies. Yes, I am talking about networking the "non-Ethernet" way.
So my advise is a four step process: The "Ask nicely" part is the Grand Finale. Your posts have introduced you and your site, you are no longer a stranger. Simply post a message and ask if anyone is interested in exchanging links with you. List your wants and demands and wait. Do this, and the whole link exchanging process will be made a lot easier. Sure it takes a little bit of time, but done the right way a link partner for one site is a link partner for life - for many other sites and projects to come. |
