Make money and website marketing - let's look at some figures

Every now and then I get emails asking how much money one can make from website marketing. Nedless to say, it is impossible to give an answer as it depends on many factors. Ambition, drive, luck, writing skills, knowledge of chosen subject matter and many other aspects play an important role on your road to success.

But looking at some figures and breaking it down is always a stimulating and interesting exercise. So here we go.

Let's be bold. Say your goal is to make $120,000 per year. Is it feasible - or even possible - to make that kind of money from publishing and marketing websites? Let's look at the numbers and you be the judge.

To make $120,000 per year you need to make $10,000 per month or even better $334 per day. To make $334 per day is not easy but let's break it down further.

So how do we make $334 per day? We need to write

  • 34 webpages that make about $10 per day
  • 334 webpages that make $1 per day
  • 3340 webpages that make 10 cents per day

Let's say we go for the middle alternative. We now need to build 334 webpages that make $1 each, every day. And for simplicity, let's say that we are going to try and make $120,000 from Adsense alone (in addition to affiliate commissions).

So how do we make $120,000 from Adsense? Let's go back to the "334 webpages that make $1 per page, per day" perspective. Here are a couple of hypothetical examples:

  • 200 visitors per webpage, 5% click-through-rate (CTR), 10 cents average payout = $1
  • 100 visitors per webpage, 10% CTR, 10 cents average payout = $1
  • 80 visitors per webpage, 5% CTR, 25 cents average payout = $1
  • 40 visitors per webpage, 10% CTR, 25 cents average payout = $1
  • 40 visitors per webpage, 5% CTR, 50 cents average payout = $1
  • 20 visitors per webpage, 10% CTR, 50 cents average payout = $1

Let's pick the one "in the middle" again. So we need:

  • 334 webpages with Adsense ads
  • 80 visitors per webpage, per day
  • 5% CTR
  • 25 cents payout

Does it feel more feasible to make $120,000 per year now? If not you should remember that we can of course have more than one website. An we have not even taken affiliate commissions into account. Add those to the mix and you will find that it takes "even less".

Does it still seem impossible? Imagine if you could improve the CTR to 10%. Do the calculations and you'll see the impact of higher CTR. And who knows, maybe your niche offers a lot of high paying keywords. Imagine if the average payout goes to 50 cents. Do the calculations and see the difference. Maybe you are content with $60,000, $90,000 or even $30,000 per year. Play with the numbers and see what it takes to make your goals reality. Breaking it down into manageable pieces can help you visualize getting there.

Anyway, don't get me wrong. It is not easy to make $120,000 per year from publishing and marketing websites. But does it not at least sound possible? You be the judge. I know what I know.

Please note that Adsense terms do not allow that anyone gives out information about real earnings, CTR rates or any other REAL data relating to the Adsense program. Because of this all these examples are hypothetical. Payout and CTR rates are made up to illustrate a point. You should also be aware that you are not allowed to build websites for Adsense only. Please refer to the Adsense terms for full details.
