Think Infomercial Product Review: Why Not To "Hard Sell" On All Your PagesIf you advertise you probably use a landing page where you "break down" objections to buy, have several calls to action, list features, stress benefits, and so on. But what if you have a 50 page site about "thingys" (if 50 pages sound a lot, remember how you eat an elephant..one bite at a time). You got a 50-page site, and to make money you need the visitor to buy from you. Let's sell everywhere and on all pages. Right? I don't think you should and there are a couple of good reasons for this:
Writing A Good Sales Pages Takes Time And EffortThe main reason for not selling on all pages is that it is difficult enough to write, test, tweak and improve ONE great sales page. And if you can write 50 great UNIQUE sales pages about one particular product aimed at a specific segment, you should niche your sites. Build several sites that focus on these micro niches. Believe me when I say that niche sites outsell mall-type sites. Surfers Look For Relevant InformationIf they look for information, give them information and a really great headline to lead them in. Do you like to arrive at a page where you are greeted with the words "CLICK HERE NOW" or "SAVE 50% - ACT TODAY". I don't. But "Click Here For More Information" may be pretty darn enticing AFTER I have read a couple of paragraphs about how you can make my problems go away (some of them anyway). Search Engines Like Unique ContentIf you sell on all pages, all pages will essentially be the same. Right? And who does not like duplicate content. *drum-roll* Search engines! To simplistic? Maybe. But simple tends to work. Furhermore, do search engines like outbound affiliate links? Who knows for sure? I don't know what the engines will favour next month - but it must be a safe bet to assume that they will always like relevant information. If I was running a search engine, I would think twice about including all 50 pages of a site where all pages link to Commission Junction. You Need To Create A Relationship With The SurferWe have all been taught that it is important to ask for the order. A sales person that does not ask, will rarely get the sale. But to ask too early can be counter productive. By offering relevant information the visitor will form an opinion about you and your site. Impress the visitor and he or she may come back or even buy from you on the first visit. So there you have it. In many ways, back to basics. But basics do work. Create value for the visitor. Because everyone likes to shop at their favorite shop. How I Organize A SiteThis is how I would organize a site marketing one product or service.
If I have more than one product or service per site, I give each product its own directory and follow the same principle. The main difference is that the main (root) home page focuses on selling the main product with prominent links to additional products or services. No magic involved, but it has worked well for me. |
