Choose The Right Keywords And See Your Marketing Take Off

You can look at choosing the right keywords in many different ways. I have chosen to focus on the approaches to choosing keywords.

The "Whatever I fancy" approach to keyword selection

The description is kind of self-explanatory. The Whatever I fancy method is usually the result of planning your site structure. Though there is no right or wrong way followers of this "method" can find themselves targetting keywords that are low in demand (not a lot of searches for the keyword) and very high in supply (many other webmasters had the same idea). I believe there are better ways.

The Mathematician's Method To Keywords

You like figures to add up and show you the way? This method should suit you perfectly. It's free and gives good guidance. Only one negative -- it is time consuming.

The Mathematician bases keyword selection on the Supply-Demand Ratio. Simple enough, isn't it?

Supply is defined as the number of results returned by your favorite search engine for any one keyword or keyword combination. Demand is defined as the number of searches performed at Overture for the same keyword or keyword combination. Do the math and you get the supply-demand ratio. An example:

  • Keyword Supply
A search for "thingys" at a search engine returns 2 000 000 results or listings. These are your competitors or the supply for the keyword "thingys".
  • Demand
There were 2000 searches for "thingys" last month at Overture. This means that you have 2000 potential customers. This is of course the demand for "thingys" - see demand resources page.
  • Supply-Demand Ration
Divide the two numbers and you get the supply-demand ratio for "thingys". In this example it would be 1000

Is 1000 a great ratio? Good? Bad? There is no simple answer as you have to take the actual supply and demand figures into consideration.

The benefit of the supply-demand ratio is that it yields comparative figures within a market or niche. You measure the popularity and saturation of any given keywords compared to other similar keywords in the same market. The lower the ratio the better.

One more word of advice, always keep an eye on the actual numbers for demand. A low ratio with minimal demand means a lot of work for a very small potential market.

Choosing Keywords With Reality In mind

To put it simply: the realist uses the supply-demand ratio with the added twist of ignoring keywords that are too high in supply. Forget about keywords like "casino" or "credit card".

Sure the pay is good but what is the benefit of being ranked number 2000 for a very saturated keyword when you can dominate a niche.

The realist uses the supply-demand ratio to find attractive keywords in less saturated markets -- and then try to dominate them.

    The Specialist's Approach To Keywords

The specialist is an expert on the topic in hand and commissions are not a dominant factor.

So what if the market is full of sites offering plain "thingys". You can use your experience and knowledge to stand out from the crowd and find your niche market for "blue thingys". And best of all, writing will come easy as you know your subject.

For the specialist to be successful it is best to focus on a narrow niche market. The specialist will often use AdSense type advertising to increase revenues - see What is AdSense Advertising?.

    The Automated Way

There is a great automated tool that will calculate the supply-demand ratio for you. It's called the Adword Analyzer. And it is fast. I mean fast as in 200 keywords or keyword combinations in minutes.

Regardless of your approach, the automated way will save you lots of time and effort. Of course, everything the software does for you, you could do manually. Time and effort are the key benefits.

The software sells for about $100 and I use it for my sites as well as my PPC campaigns.

I can recommend Adword Analyzer if you are serious about keyword selection. Last time I checked there was a 90-day "no questions asked money-back guarantee". If you are not happy, you get a refund. Check the page for details. To learn more about the Adword Analyzer visit the PPC resources page.
