Don't Select Keywords To Rank In Search Engine Based On Volume AloneWhat do I mean by volume? Simply the number of searches in any one search engine for any given keyword or keyword combination for any given period of time. Or in fewer words: demand - see demand resources page. But selecting keywords for search engine promotion based on volume or demand alone is not a good idea. Volume is great but relevance and content rules. Let's say you decide to get as much traffic as you possibly can. Let's for arguments sake say that you manage to "trick" the search engines to send you lots and lots of visitors. People search for keywords like "bathroom appliances", "travel guides" and "home decoration". The results list your site selling "thingys". Great! Or is it? What happens now? If the surfer decides to click on your listing expect the following: Visitors will take one look at your site and see that it has nothing to do with "home decoration", click the "back" button and choose another site. People have come to expect good content. And if history has taught us anything, the search engine will "catch you" and you will loose your engine position. There a tons of theories about how to "trick" or manipulate the search engines. If you think about how they work, you can probably figure out a way or two yourself. But it is a big no-no! The "benefit" is at best short-lived and it can cost you your domain name, your reputation and your business! You see, search engines have developed the capacity to remember! Yep, "trick" the engine and you may find your site, that is your domain name, black-listed and penalized for a looooong time. If you are black listed you will not get back into the search engine listings. Does not matter if you change your ways. I have heard of webmasters making "honest" mistakes, finding themselves black listed, apologizing, changing their ways and getting back in. But I would not risk it. It is not worth it. Choose keywords with relevance in mind and prosper in the search engines. |
