For most people server is synonymous to their web site hosting service's host computer.

Think of a server as a delivery mechanism of your web pages.

The server holds information such as your web pages (see FTP). When a surfer using a browser requests a page from your site by typing "www.yourname.com", the server responds and serves the pages to the visitor.

There are many types of servers. What I described above is a web server that responds to requests for web pages.
